Nearly Twenty Years of Transforming Emergency Care in India
Since 2007, the GWU-MEM program has trained over 1,300 emergency physicians across more than 30 partner institutions in India, building the workforce, systems, and standards that emergency care had long needed.
What began as one of India's first structured emergency medicine training programs has grown into a nationally significant model for health workforce development. GWU-MEM trained physicians now lead emergency departments, mentor the next generation of residents, and deliver care that is faster, safer, and more equitable. Communities also benefit from this program with well over 35,000 individuals from various sectors trained in basic life support and first aid training.
This impact report tells the story of the nearly twenty years of partnership and continues to make the case for why investing in emergency medicine training is not just a clinical priority, but a health system imperative
