The best way to improve access to emergency care is through high-quality training of local healthcare providers. As the global burden of disease shifts towards increasing mortality from non-communicable disease, the growing specialty of emergency medicine is uniquely poised to meet the growing need. Unfortunately, in many low-and-middle-income countries, emergency medicine and training programs are severely lacking. The George Washington University Department of Emergency Medicine’s Global EM Division has partnered with local institutions, over the past twenty years, to build capacity in emergency medicine through education and training.
